Using Vivid Language and Sensory Details in Stories

Two scientists pass in a hallway. One has just helped discover seven Earth-sized planets, forty light-years away, sitting in what astronomers call the Goldilocks zone — the band around a star where water could stay liquid. So how would it be said to a colleague? Not with a sentence packed with phrases like "transiting configuration of seven temperate terrestrial bodies." That's how the press release reads, and it's the version a brain forgets before it finishes the clause.

Carmine Gallo, who broke down hundreds of TED talks for his book Talk Like TED, opens a piece on that NASA announcement with exactly this gap — between the way scientists write a finding and the way a human being would actually say it out loud. The official language is precise and completely forgettable. The spoken version, the one that survives, trades the abstraction for something one can picture. And that swap — from the word the brain files away to the image the brain holds onto — is the entire craft of this chapter.

That's not just a story about astronomers struggling with a press office. It's the cleanest illustration of the thing sentences are quietly doing to a listener's brain, one word at a time. Because the choice between an abstract word and a concrete one isn't a style preference. It changes where the memory physically lands.

Here's the proof, and it comes from a brain scanner. A team led by Signy Sheldon, a memory psychologist at McGill University, published a study in the journal JNeurosci where they put thirty-five people in an fMRI machine and played them three completely mundane stories — going grocery shopping, going to the airport, having dinner at a restaurant with a friend. Each story came in two versions. Same events. Same plot. Only the details changed.

In one version of the restaurant story, the narrator says he remembered thinking how delicious the pasta was, and wondering if it was that good or if he was just starving. That's the conceptual version — it's about thoughts and feelings. In the other version, he remembers the two-foot-long pepper mill the waiter used to season the dishes, and the spaghetti swirled around three meatballs on his plate. That's the perceptual version — it's about what one would actually see and touch. Same dinner. Two completely different ways of telling it.

And the scanner showed something striking. When people recalled the sensory version — the pepper mill, the three meatballs — their hippocampus, the brain's memory hub, lit up alongside a region called the left angular gyrus. That's an area that fires when sensory detail is being pulled up from memory. The concrete version literally routed itself through the brain's machinery for sights and textures and sounds. The abstract version went somewhere else entirely — through a network tied to self-reflection and emotion.

Now, stay with this for one more step, because there's a subtlety here that matters. The study did not find that sensory stories are easier to remember. People recalled both versions about equally well. So this isn't "always pick concrete and you win." It's something more useful — the kind of detail chosen decides which part of the listener's brain is being addressed. Want them to see the scene, to feel like they were standing in the room? Reach for the senses. The pepper mill is doing work the word "delicious" simply cannot do.

This is the part that trips most people up. They hear "be more vivid" and think it means describe more. Pile it on. Tell them the color of the walls, the song on the speakers, the weather outside, the waiter's name. And that's exactly backward. More detail doesn't make a scene vivid. The right detail does.

Think about how memory actually works. A wedding isn't remembered by reciting every floral arrangement. The groom's hands shaking — that's what stays. One image. That single shaking-hands detail tells everything — the nerves, the love, the weight of the moment — and it does it in three words. A hundred details would have buried it. This is the discipline almost nobody talks about: vivid language is a subtraction game far more than an addition game. The two-foot-long pepper mill works in that study precisely because it stands alone. Surround it with twenty other observations and it disappears into noise.

So here's a way to feel the difference. Picture someone telling about a hospital visit. Version one: "The waiting room was sterile and uncomfortable and we sat there for what felt like forever, anxious and exhausted." Every word is true. None of it sticks, because it's all conceptual — sterile, uncomfortable, anxious. Those are conclusions, not images. Version two: "There was one vending machine, and it only had the yellow bag of chips left." That's it. One detail. And suddenly the room comes alive. The fluorescent boredom, the hours, the strange way small things matter when scared — all of it is there. The yellow bag of chips is doing the work the whole adjective pile-up failed to do.

So if someone stopped right here and asked what the secret to a vivid scene actually is — what would the answer be? It's not painting the whole picture. It's choosing the one brushstroke that makes the listener paint the rest themselves. Their brain fills in the hospital. Just hand them the chips.

That's the discipline of the telling detail. Now there's a second tool, and it does something the senses alone can't — it makes the unfamiliar graspable in an instant.

Go back to those astronomers for a second. "Seven Earth-sized planets in the Goldilocks zone." The phrase "Goldilocks zone" is doing something sneaky and brilliant. Nobody has a sensory memory of an exoplanet's orbit. But everybody knows the fairy tale — not too hot, not too cold, just right. So scientists borrowed a children's story to make an abstract band of orbital distance instantly clear to anyone. That's a metaphor doing heavy lifting. It takes a thing never seen and bolts it onto a thing known since childhood.

This is why metaphor and analogy belong in the same chapter as sensory detail — they solve the same problem from the other side. Sensory detail makes a scene one could have witnessed feel real. Analogy makes a concept one couldn't have witnessed — a financial system, a protein, an orbit — suddenly have a shape the mind can hold. When someone says the immune system is like a security team that has to learn to recognize troublemakers without arresting the regular employees, they've taken something invisible and microscopic and given it a familiar face. The concept isn't seen directly. But now it's understood, because it borrowed the form of something already known.

The trick with analogy is the same as with detail: reach far enough that it surprises, but close enough that it's instantly familiar. The Goldilocks zone works because porridge and planets have nothing to do with each other — except the one thing that matters, "just right." That distance is what makes it click. An analogy that's too close to the thing it explains teaches nothing. One that's too far just confuses. The good ones live in that gap.

Now, here's where serious people actually disagree, and it's worth naming. There's a real tension in the research between the perceptual and the conceptual. Sheldon's team found the sensory version routes through the senses — but they also found people preferred the conceptual stories and felt more confident remembering them. And Chris Baldassano, a memory researcher at Columbia who wasn't part of the study, put his thumb firmly on that scale. He said when one watches a movie, some striking images might be recalled, but the real core of the story is the conceptual stuff — the relationships, the characters, the emotions. In other words, one camp says the senses are where stories live, and another says the senses are just decoration on what really matters, which is meaning.

So who's right? Both — and the resolution is the whole point of this chapter. The sensory detail is not the meaning. The pepper mill is not the dinner. But the sensory detail is the delivery system for the meaning. The shaking hands carry the love. The yellow bag of chips carries the fear. Concrete words aren't chosen because the concrete is the point — they're chosen because they smuggle the emotion past the listener's defenses and plant it somewhere they can feel it. Baldassano is right that people walk away holding the feeling. He's just missing that the feeling rode in on the senses.

Which is exactly why this connects to everything that came before. The willingness to be real, to be vulnerable — that earns the trust. But trust alone just makes someone willing to listen. The vivid, concrete, single telling detail is what then makes them see what was seen, so they end up feeling what was felt. Concreteness and emotion were never two separate tools. The concrete is how the emotion gets in.

Strip it all down, and three things are doing the real work. The right detail beats a pile of details — one yellow bag of chips beats a paragraph of adjectives. A good analogy hands someone a familiar shape for an unfamiliar idea, like a Goldilocks zone for an orbit. And the sensory detail is never the point — it's the vehicle the meaning rides in on.

So one has chosen the one word that makes them see it. But the same sentence, said two different ways, can land or die — and that has nothing to do with the words at all.
