Quick gut check before going further. A Big Mac has the same number of calories as — well, half-remembered comparisons exist, even if most people have never tried to nail one down. Something about a steak, or two of them, or a whole meal that defies guessing. The exact figure tends to slip away, but the shape of the fact often lingers. Now try to recall a single number from the last quarterly report worth sitting through. A revenue figure. A growth percentage. Anything.
Most people come up empty on the second one. And here's the part that should register as troubling: the report was almost certainly more important to life than the calorie count of a hamburger. People were paid to remember it. Nobody pays anyone to remember Big Mac trivia. Yet one stuck like a burr and the other evaporated before reaching the parking lot.
That gap — between the idea that survives and the idea that dies on contact — is the whole subject of this section. Because it's not random. Two brothers spent years pulling apart sticky ideas to find out what they have in common, and what they found is a toolkit. Six traits. Their starting question was the one just demonstrated — why do urban legends and conspiracy theories spread effortlessly while genuinely important ideas struggle to get off the ground? They open with a line from Mark Twain that captures the unfairness of it perfectly: a lie can get halfway around the world before the truth has even got its boots on. The infuriating thing isn't that bad ideas spread. It's that they spread better, and the Heaths wanted to know why.
What they discovered is that sticky messages of every kind — a coach's lesson on sportsmanship, a product vision from Sony, a public-health scare that turns out to be a hoax — all draw their power from the same six traits. And the six spell a word, which is the Heaths showing off a little, but it works. Simple. Unexpected. Concrete. Credible. Emotional. And Story. Success — minus the second S, because they have a sense of humor about it. Walk through them once and the patterns start appearing everywhere.
Start with simple. This doesn't mean dumbing down, and that's the part people get wrong immediately. Simple means finding the core of an idea and being ruthless about everything else. It's the difference between a lawyer who argues ten points and one who argues the single strongest point. The Heaths point to a Southwest Airlines mantra — they're "the low-fare airline" — as the kind of compact core that lets a thousand employees make the right call without a manual. Strip an idea down to what matters most, then say that, and only that, first.
Next, unexpected. This one is the attention-grabber, and it works by violating what a listener's brain already expects. The mind runs on patterns — guesses about what comes next — and it mostly tunes out anything that matches the guess. So breaking the pattern is the move. That's exactly why the Big Mac comparison sticks: it reframes a hamburger as a calorie bomb that rivals an entire steak dinner, when the expectation is that hamburgers are light food. Surprise opens a gap, and the brain hates an open gap.
The Heaths have a name for that gap, and it's the sharpest tool in the whole book. They call it a curiosity gap. The idea, which they borrow from a researcher named George Loewenstein, is that curiosity isn't sparked when nothing is known about a subject — it's sparked when just enough is known to feel the hole in what remains unknown. Tell someone there are six traits and then make them wait for the sixth, and they'll sit through the other five to get it. A good murder mystery is one long curiosity gap. So is a good headline. So, frankly, is the way the previous section ended — promising the reasons some ideas refuse to leave, and then making the reader start a whole new section to get them.
So that's the engine. Violate an expectation to grab attention, then open a gap to hold it. Surprise gets the door open; curiosity keeps them in the room.
Now, the third trait, and this is the one this whole course leans on hardest. Concrete. Specific, sensory, real-world detail outlasts abstraction in memory every single time, and most people's ideas die precisely because they're too abstract to grab onto.
Here's the kitchen-table version. Memory works a bit like Velcro — and the Heaths actually call this the Velcro theory of memory. One side of Velcro has thousands of tiny hooks; the other has thousands of tiny loops. The more hooks an idea throws out, the more places it can catch and hold. An abstract statement — "our company values operational excellence" — has almost no hooks. It's the smooth side. It touches memory and slides right off. But a concrete image hooks onto everything already known. Say "a desk so clean you could eat off it," and suddenly there are hooks everywhere — the desk, the food, the sight of it. It catches and it stays.
This is where most people get stuck, so name it plainly. The obvious assumption is that smart, sophisticated communication should be abstract — that concrete language is for children and big ideas deserve big words. It's exactly backwards. The Heaths found that experts are the worst offenders, because they've spent so long swimming in abstraction they forget anyone else needs the picture. The cure isn't to lower an idea. It's to give it something to hook onto.
Want a test of how powerful concrete beats abstract? The Heaths tell the story of Barry Marshall, the Australian scientist who was convinced stomach ulcers were caused by bacteria, not stress. Nobody believed him. The data didn't move anyone. So in 1984 he did something no chart could do — he drank a glass full of the bacteria himself, gave himself gastritis, and then cured it with antibiotics. He later won a Nobel Prize. He could have published another paper. Instead he made the idea concrete enough to swallow, and that's the version the world remembers.
The fourth trait is credible. A sticky idea has to make people believe it, and the surprise here is that the most powerful credibility usually doesn't come from statistics or authorities. It comes from vivid, testable details the listener can check for themselves. The Heaths call it the Sinatra Test — if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. One unimpeachable example does more than a pile of credentials. Marshall drinking the bacteria is a credibility move. You can't argue with a man who poisoned himself to win the argument.
The fifth trait is emotional, and the sixth is story, and substantial attention will come to both — emotion and the architecture of story carry whole sections of this course on their own. So here, just the seed. People don't take action because of facts. They take action because they feel something. The Heaths point to what they call the Mother Teresa Effect, drawn from research showing people give far more generously to one named, pictured, suffering child than to statistics about millions in need. The same dollar, the same cause — but one version makes people feel, and feeling is what opens the wallet. Make people care, and that happens by tying an idea to something they already care about.
So here's the payoff, and it's the reason these six traits are sitting at the front of this course rather than buried somewhere in the middle. They aren't six separate tricks. They're the toolkit running underneath everything else about to come. When a later section teaches building tension by planting a question and delaying the answer — that's the curiosity gap, made into structure. When choosing one telling sensory detail over a pile of them — that's concrete, applied at the level of a single sentence. When the case gets made that emotion moves people where logic can't — that's the emotional trait, given a whole chapter to breathe. The Heaths gave the periodic elements.
