That box on the closet shelf — the one with the rubber-banded bundle of letters and the photos sliding around loose inside an old shoebox. That shoebox is doing real damage. The cardboard is almost certainly made from wood pulp, which means it's slowly turning acidic and breathing that acid onto everything it touches. And the magnetic photo album sitting next to it, the kind with the sticky pages and the clear plastic film you peel back? That one is worse. Those pages use an adhesive that yellows, hardens, and bonds permanently to the back of a photo, while the plastic overlay is often the exact kind of plastic that gives off gases as it ages. People reach for both of these because they look protective. They're two of the most reliably destructive things you can store a memory in.
So here's the move this chapter is built around. The handful of reassuring words printed on archival storage products — acid-free, lignin-free, buffered, archival, polyester — mean very specific things, and a couple of them mean nothing at all. Once you can read those labels, you can shop with confidence instead of standing in an aisle guessing.
Start with the word you'll see most: acid-free. The reason it matters traces straight back to the chemistry that runs through paper — acid is what breaks the long cellulose chains that give paper its strength, and an acidic enclosure will quietly transfer that acid into whatever's inside. The Northeast Document Conservation Center, the nonprofit lab in Andover, Massachusetts that handles conservation for libraries across the country, puts it plainly in their storage leaflet: acidity in poor-quality folders migrates into the documents, discolors them, and speeds their deterioration. So acid-free means the material was manufactured at a neutral pH — somewhere in the range of seven to eight and a half, where seven is dead neutral. That's the floor you want for anything touching your originals.
But here's the catch, and it's the part the label won't tell you. Acid-free describes the material today, the day it was made. It does not promise the material will stay that way. And this is where the second word does the real work.
Lignin-free. Lignin is the compound in wood that makes a tree stiff — and it's also what makes cheap paper self-destruct, because as lignin breaks down it generates acid from the inside. A folder can test acid-free on the day it's made and still be full of lignin, which means it's a time bomb. Give it a few years and it turns acidic on its own, and now your supposedly safe folder is the thing attacking your letters. That's exactly why the National Archives, in its guidance on storing family papers, tells you to look for board and folder stock that's both lignin-free and acid-free. The two words together are the promise. Either one alone is a half-measure.
Now the third word, which is the one that confuses people most: buffered. A buffered material has an alkaline substance mixed into it during manufacture — usually calcium carbonate, the same stuff in antacid tablets, often around three percent. Think of it as an antacid tablet built into the paper. As acids form over the years, the buffer neutralizes them, the way you'd take a Tums for heartburn. The Northeast Document Conservation Center notes that buffered materials are the right choice for storing most books and paper documents, precisely because they keep fighting acid long after the day they were made.
So if buffering is so good, you might assume you'd want everything buffered. And that's the assumption that trips people up — because for certain photographs, buffering is exactly wrong.
Stay with this for one step, because it's the single most counterintuitive thing in the whole chapter. That same Northeast Document Conservation Center leaflet lists the exceptions, and they're worth knowing by name: blueprints, cyanotypes — those deep-blue photographic prints — and some color photographs, along with artwork made with dyes or pigments that are sensitive to alkalinity. For those items, the high-alkaline environment of a buffered enclosure can actually cause damage. The very thing that protects an old letter can harm a cyanotype. That's the limit of one-size-fits-all advice, and it's why no single product is correct for everything in your box. When in doubt with photographs — especially color ones and the early blue-toned processes — you reach for an unbuffered, neutral-pH enclosure instead.
Which brings up an obvious question. If acid-free can lapse and buffering can backfire, how do you actually know an enclosure is safe for a photograph? And the answer is a single test most people have never heard of.
It's called the PAT — the Photographic Activity Test. This is the one piece of jargon worth memorizing from this entire section. The PAT is an international standard that puts an enclosure material through accelerated aging next to a stand-in for a real photograph, to see whether the material does anything harmful — fading the image, staining it, attacking the silver. If a product passes the PAT, it's been proven not to chemically attack a photo over time. The National Archives is explicit about it: for containers storing photographs, look for ones that have passed the PAT. So acid-free and lignin-free are your minimum for paper documents. For photographs, PAT-passed is the standard you actually want. A folder can be acid-free and still fail the PAT — the two are not the same promise, and the photo is what's irreplaceable.
That distinction matters because of the fourth word — the one that means nothing. Archival. There is no agency policing the word "archival." Any manufacturer can stamp it on any product, on a box of mediocre cardboard sleeves, on a binder, on a roll of tape. It is a marketing word, full stop. So how do you verify a product is what it claims? You ignore "archival" and you look for the specifics underneath it — does it state a pH, does it say lignin-free, does it say "passed the PAT"? A reputable supplier will publish those details and will tell you, if you ask, the type and amount of buffer they use. If a product only says "archival" and offers nothing concrete behind it, treat that as the absence of information, not the presence of quality.
So here's the gut-check before we get to the plastics. If someone handed you a folder that said "acid-free, archival quality" and asked whether it's safe for your grandmother's color wedding photo — what would you say? … You'd say you don't have enough information yet. Acid-free is the floor. "Archival" tells you nothing. And for a color photo you'd want to know whether it's buffered — because it shouldn't be — and whether it passed the PAT. Three real questions, hiding behind two reassuring words.
Now, the plastics, because this is where the magnetic-album disaster gets explained. Not all clear plastic is the same, and the difference is the difference between protection and slow poisoning. The good plastics have names worth knowing: polyester — often sold under the brand name Mylar — along with polypropylene and polyethylene. These are chemically stable. They don't off-gas, they don't yellow, they don't migrate anything into your photo. The National Archives recommends exactly these three for sleeves and photo corners. A crystal-clear polyester sleeve lets you view and even share a fragile document without ever touching its surface — which is why the genealogist Denise May Levenick, who writes as The Family Curator, says she standardizes on clear polyester sleeves in her own home archive, so items can be seen and passed around while staying fully protected.
And then there's the plastic to never let near your collection: PVC. Polyvinyl chloride. This is the soft, slightly oily-feeling plastic in a lot of cheap binders and old sleeves, and as it ages it releases chemicals — that faint plastic smell is literally the product breaking down and gassing off acid and plasticizers onto whatever it's hugging. PVC is what turns that magnetic album into a trap. So a quick field test: if a clear plastic sleeve feels slick and floppy and smells like a new shower curtain, it's probably PVC. Put it back. A polyester sleeve is crisp, clear, and odorless.
One practical warning on those polyester sleeves, straight from the National Archives guidance, because it's the kind of thing nobody tells you until it's too late. Don't slip a polyester sleeve inside a bound book. The edges of polyester are sharp enough to slice the page next to them. The sleeve protects the loose document beautifully — and quietly saws into anything it's pressed against. Right tool, wrong place.
So that's the vocabulary. Now, matching the enclosure to the object — because a box is not a folder is not a sleeve, and each one does a different job. Think of it as nested layers of defense. The folder is the first skin against acid migration and light. The box is the armor against crushing, dust, and physical knocks. And the sleeve is for the items that need to be handled often or are already fragile.
Folders come first. A lignin-free, acid-free folder — buffered for documents, unbuffered for the photo exceptions — holds your letters and papers flat and isolates them from their neighbors. That isolation matters enormously, because the acidic newspaper clipping is the one that poisons the whole drawer. The Family Curator describes the telltale evidence everyone's seen: the brown stain on a Bible page where someone tucked a news clipping in as a bookmark, the acid bleeding straight from the cheap paper into the good. So you isolate newsprint and other high-acid items in their own enclosures, away from everything else.
Then the box. The National Archives gives a clean rule here: the container should be big enough that originals lie flat or stand upright without folding or bending, and the right size so things don't shift around inside. Too big is a problem — items slump and slide. Too small forces a bend. And don't overstuff it; a crammed box crushes the very things it's meant to protect. If you've only got a few documents in a tall upright box, drop in a spacer board to keep them standing rather than slouching. The Family Curator describes standardizing her own home archive on two formats — flat ten-by-twelve-inch boxes that stack, and five-inch-wide upright document cases that work like a little filing cabinet, keeping items from being flattened under the weight of whatever's stacked on top.
That upright versus flat choice is the practical heart of it. Flat boxes for the most fragile and the oversized — the brittle certificate, the large photograph that can't take any flexing. Upright document cases for the bulk of your letters and papers, where standing them like files keeps any single sheet from bearing the crushing weight of everything above it.
A word on big, oversized things — the map, the diploma, the rolled poster. The National Archives' advice is to roll them, but to do it right. Roll the sheet onto the outside of a sturdy archival tube so the curve is gentle and the item can't get crushed flat. Use a tube buffered and low in lignin, and make it at least two inches longer than the widest part of your sheet, so the edges never hang off and get crushed. You can roll up to five sheets onto one tube — but roll all five on together at the same time, not one wrapped around the next, or the inner ones get a tighter, more damaging curl.
And one last layer that's easy to forget: interleaving. That's the plain sheet of acid-free, lignin-free tissue or paper you slip between items to keep them from touching. But here's the trap — the Northeast Document Conservation Center warns that acidic interleaving paper transfers acid right into the items it touches. So interleaving with the wrong paper doesn't just fail to help, it actively spreads the damage. The protective sheet and the destructive sheet look identical to the eye. The only difference is whether the paper itself passed the same tests as everything else.
Strip all of it away and a few things are doing the real work. Acid-free is your floor, and lignin-free is what keeps it a floor instead of a trapdoor. For anything that touches a photograph, the PAT is the standard, not the word "archival," which means nothing. Buffering protects most paper and harms a short list of photos and blue-toned prints, so it's never automatic. And the good plastics — polyester, polypropylene, polyethylene — protect, while PVC poisons. Get those right and the box on the shelf becomes a vault instead of a slow-acting acid bath.
Here's the line worth carrying out the door: the word "archival" is unregulated and proves nothing, but "passed the PAT" is a test a photograph actually had to survive. Buy the test, not the adjective.
