There's a photograph somewhere in almost every house that tells you exactly what light does. It's the one in the frame on the windowsill, or hanging on the wall opposite the big south-facing window. Look at it closely and you'll see the story written right into it. The sky has gone pale. The faces have flattened out. Reds have drained away, and what's left leans strange and bluish, or sometimes oddly orange. And here's the part that stops people cold — that fading is not coming back. Not by moving the photo. Not by giving it a rest in a dark drawer. Not ever.
That photo on the windowsill isn't just damaged. It's a one-way door, and it tells you the single most important fact about light and air in a home archive — the damage they do is cumulative and permanent. You just stop spending for a while. Leave the light on, and the account keeps draining. So a photo that sits in bright light for one year takes roughly the same total hit as a photo that sits in half that brightness for two years. The total dose is what matters — intensity multiplied by time. This is the part that trips people up. They assume a quick blast of sun is the danger and a dim corner is safe. But dim light over decades adds up to the same drained account. There's no level of light that does zero damage. There's only slower and faster.
That's why a museum gallery is kept so frustratingly dim, and why the truly fragile things — a watercolor, an old letter in fading ink — get shown for a few weeks and then put away in the dark for years. They're not being precious. They're managing a budget that never refills.
So if all light spends down the account, which light spends it fastest? That's where ultraviolet comes in. Think of the spectrum of light as a row of hammers of different weights. The visible light you see is doing damage, sure. But ultraviolet — the invisible wavelengths just past violet, the stuff that gives you a sunburn — is the heaviest hammer in the row. It carries more energy per hit, so it breaks chemical bonds the visible light can't even reach. NEDCC singles it out specifically: UV is what drives the embrittlement, the slow turn from supple to crumbly.
And this is the practical sting. The two light sources most homes are full of are exactly the two richest in UV. Daylight — sunlight through a window — is loaded with it. And old fluorescent tubes, the kind humming in a lot of basements and garages and kitchens, leak UV too. Mary Lynn Ritzenthaler, who runs the conservation lab at the National Archives, names both directly in her guidance on family photos: all types of light cause damage, but sunlight and fluorescent light are the quickest to cause changes. So the cheery sunlit windowsill and the workshop fluorescent are not neutral spots to keep memories. They're the two worst lighting choices in the house, sitting in plain sight.
Now, before this turns into an argument for sealing everything in a vault forever — there's a real tension here, and it's worth naming out loud. You didn't keep your grandmother's photo so it could live in a box where no one ever sees it. The whole point of an heirloom is that it's seen, that it sits on the mantel, that a grandchild asks who that is. Preservation and display pull in opposite directions, and pretending otherwise is how you end up resenting the advice and ignoring all of it.
So here's how conservators actually thread that needle, and you can do the exact same thing at home. The single best move is the one Ritzenthaler recommends without hesitation: don't display the original at all. Make a good scan, print the scan, and frame the print. Hang the copy in the sunniest, most beloved spot in the house — let it fade, who cares, you can print another one tomorrow. The thing on the wall and the thing you're preserving don't have to be the same object.
When you do want the genuine article out — and sometimes you will — the trick is rotation. Instead of leaving one precious photo on the wall for thirty years, show it for a season and then swap it back into the dark and bring out a different one. You're spreading that fixed light budget across many objects instead of draining one to nothing. And keep it off any wall that faces direct sun, away from the window, out of the path of those fluorescent tubes. If you frame something real, UV-filtering glass or acrylic blocks the heaviest hammer in the row — not all the damage, but the worst of it. Think of it as sunscreen for the photograph. It doesn't make the sun safe. It just slows the burn.
So that's light — the enemy you can see. Now for the one you can't, and it's the part most people have never even heard of.
The air in your house is not just air. Drifting through it, invisible, is a slow chemical soup that quietly eats at everything it touches. NEDCC names three culprits: dust, pollution from outside, and something called VOCs — volatile organic compounds. That's a mouthful, so here's the kitchen-table version. VOCs are chemicals that evaporate off of materials at room temperature. They're the smell of fresh paint, the smell of a new cardboard box, the smell of a freshly varnished shelf. That smell is literally molecules leaving the material and floating into the air — and then settling onto your photographs. NEDCC's word for how these work is exactly right: they're catalysts. They don't just damage things directly. They speed up every other kind of decay, the way a little grease makes a fire burn hotter.
And here's the twist that catches almost everyone. The most dangerous polluted air in your house often isn't drifting in from the highway outside. It's being generated inside the very box where you put things for safekeeping. This has a name in the trade — off-gassing. A cheap cardboard box, a wooden chest, a plastic sleeve made of the wrong plastic: they all slowly breathe out acids and VOCs, and they do it inside a sealed container where the photo has nowhere to escape to. You seal your treasures up to protect them, and you've built them a tiny gas chamber. That's the trap. The instinct to wrap something tightly in whatever's handy can do more harm than leaving it loose on a shelf in clean air.
Which is exactly why the choice of what you store things in matters so much — and why this course spends a whole section later on decoding the labels on boxes and sleeves.
Now, there's a genuine debate here worth being honest about, because the advice you'll find isn't all the same. Some sources lean hard toward sealing photographs in plastic sleeves for protection — and stable polyester or polyethylene sleeves, the kind Ritzenthaler at the National Archives explicitly endorses, are a real and good option. But other conservators worry that sealing anything tightly can trap off-gassing and trap moisture against the object, especially in a home where humidity swings. The honest resolution is the one the evidence actually supports. The plastic isn't the problem — the wrong plastic is, and trapped bad air is. A safe, tested sleeve in clean, stable, dry conditions protects. A cheap PVC sleeve, or a good sleeve sealed up in a damp room, harms. The material and the environment work together. Neither one alone tells you whether you're safe.
So what do you actually do at home about air you can't see? Less than you'd fear, honestly. You don't need an air filtration system. The big wins are simple. Keep things out of brand-new, strong-smelling boxes or freshly painted closets — let new materials air out for a few weeks before you trust your photos to them. If a box or chest smells sharp or chemical when you open it, believe your nose; that smell is the off-gassing, and your nose is a decent VOC detector. Keep dust down, since dust is both abrasive and a carrier for pollution. And store things in the cleanest, most stable air in the house, which usually means an interior closet, not a garage full of paint cans and exhaust.
Pull it all together and the shape of it is clean. Light spends a budget that never refills, and ultraviolet — from sun and fluorescents — spends it fastest, so the smart move is to display copies and keep originals in the dark. The air itself carries slow-acting acids, and the worst of them are often off-gassing from inside whatever you chose for storage, so the box matters as much as the room. None of this is about fixing anything. It's about spending the budget slowly.
And here's the line worth carrying out of this section: you can't undo a single minute of fading, but you control every minute that's left.
