The living ones got into the Smithsonian. In one well-documented case, conservators opened a box of beautifully boxed manuscripts — clean, climate-controlled, exactly the kind of storage this whole course has been building toward — and found the inside threaded with the tunnels and shed skins of carpet beetle larvae. The boxes had felt linings. And carpet beetle larvae, it turns out, love wool felt almost as much as they love an old sweater.

That's the trap your relative's attic just handed you. You can sort, inventory, and box everything perfectly, and a single overlooked insect can quietly eat through the lot. So this last stretch is about the threats that don't sit still — the pests, the ethical calls only you can make, and the moment when the right move is to put your own hands down and pick up the phone. It's where prevention finally meets judgment.

Start with the bugs, because they're the most concrete. The entomologist Thomas Parker, who spent years consulting for libraries and archives, framed pest control for collections in a way that flips the usual instinct. Most people think pest control means killing what's already there. Parker's whole point, in the guidance he wrote for the Northeast Document Conservation Center, is that killing an infestation is the easy part — and often the part that damages the collection most. Freezing, heating, fumigating, gassing: all of these can hurt the objects you're trying to save. The hard part, the part that actually matters, is keeping pests from getting in at all. Conservators have a name for this approach. They call it Integrated Pest Management, or IPM — and the "integrated" part means you don't rely on one weapon, you stack several small defenses that work together.

Here's the mental model. Think of your house the way a farmer thinks of a grain silo. The Northeast Document Conservation Center makes exactly this comparison — a collection of family papers and textiles is, to an insect, a warehouse of food. Paper is cellulose. Wool, silk, leather, and old photographs are protein. Starch from old adhesives is dessert. To a carpet beetle or a clothes moth, your shoebox of letters isn't a memory. It's a buffet.

So the first line of defense isn't a spray. It's the building itself — what conservators call the building envelope. Seal the gaps where things crawl in. Fix the leaky pipe, because moisture draws pests and feeds the mold that often arrives with them. Keep food out of the room where you store collections, which sounds obvious until you remember how many people keep the family albums in a hall closet two feet from the pantry. And here's the detail that catches people: the Northeast Document Conservation Center points out that the carcasses of large dead insects are themselves a food source. A dead moth in a windowsill is protein. Mice eat it. Carpet beetle larvae hatch on it and then go looking for the wool felt next door. Clean the dead bugs.

That's why housekeeping does more than make a room look tidy. The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts puts it bluntly in their preventive conservation primer: dusty, dirty spaces invite pests and mold, and they make any future disaster harder to clean up. Regular dusting isn't vanity. It's surveillance. Every time you wipe down a shelf, you're also checking the collection — and you'd be surprised how often that's how an infestation gets caught, by someone who noticed a little pile of what looked like sand and realized it was insect frass.

Which brings up the part people resist. Should you be trying to make the room sterile — zero bugs? No. And this is one of those facts that makes conservators smile. The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts says flatly that it's virtually impossible to keep a building with no insects at all — and that a building with truly zero insects is so toxic you should be worried about the humans in it. The goal was never zero. The goal is monitoring. Put down a few cheap sticky traps in corners, near baseboards, behind the boxes. Check them every so often. You're not trying to kill everything. You're trying to know what's there and whether the numbers are climbing. A trap that catches two silverfish a year is information. A trap that catches forty is an alarm.

So if a friend asked you the one-sentence version of pest management for a home archive, what would you say? … Keep the building tight, keep the room clean, put down traps, and watch the numbers — because by the time you can see the damage, the eating already happened.

Now, that's the physical threat. There's a second kind of threat to a family archive that no trap catches, and it's the one almost nobody thinks about until it blows up at a holiday dinner. Who gets to decide what happens to all this?

This is where it helps to borrow from how professional archivists think — not because your family papers are a museum, but because archivists have spent a long time working out the ethics of holding things that don't entirely belong to them. The Society of American Archivists publishes a code of ethics, and three of its ideas translate almost perfectly to a kitchen table. The first is access. The archivists' instinct is to provide the widest possible access to materials — to share, not to hoard — while respecting real limits like privacy and the wishes of the people involved. Sit with that for a second, because it cuts against a very human urge. When you become the keeper of the family photos, it is easy to start feeling like the owner. You are not the owner. You're the steward. The pictures of your grandmother belong, in any sense that matters, to everyone who's in them and everyone descended from them.

That reframe has teeth. It means the cousin who wants copies isn't a nuisance — sharing is the point. It means scanning the collection and putting it where relatives can reach it isn't a bonus chore. It's the core of the job. The Society of American Archivists is direct that even people who never actually open a box benefit from simply knowing the records exist, are cared for, and can be reached when needed. A locked archive that no one can see is barely an archive at all.

The second idea is accountability — and the archivists' version is more specific than just "be responsible." Their code says to be transparent about your interventions in the record, because what you do affects how everyone after you understands the collection. In plain terms: write down what you changed and why. If you took a scrapbook apart, note it. If you threw away the duplicates, note roughly what and why. If you renamed the mystery aunt in a photo because Uncle Ray "was pretty sure," note that it came from Uncle Ray and wasn't certain. You're not just keeping objects. You're keeping the trustworthiness of the story, and the next steward will either trust your notes or have to undo your guesses.

The third idea is the one that ties it together: stewardship. The archivists frame it as holding something in trust for people who aren't in the room — including people not born yet. The whole course has been quietly arguing that decay is predictable and you're buying decades with cheap, consistent choices. Stewardship is the same bargain pointed at the family instead of the object. You're not preserving these things for yourself. You're handing them forward in better shape than you got them, with better notes than you got, to someone you'll never meet. Which, when you say it out loud, is a strangely moving job description for a person standing in an attic with a roll of acid-free tape.

But there's a hard edge to stewardship, and it's knowing the limits of your own hands. This entire course has pushed prevention over repair — control the environment, handle with care, don't try to fix things. So when is the exception? When do you actually need a professional?

The honest answer is that the line is about damage you can't reverse and shouldn't touch. If a photograph is flaking, if paint or emulsion is lifting off the surface, if a document is so brittle it cracks when you turn it — stop. If something is torn through an image you care about, if a daguerreotype is tarnishing under its glass, if mold has actually taken hold rather than just threatened, if water got into something and it's drying into a warped, stuck brick — that's a conservator's problem, not a kitchen-table one. The tell is simple. If the fix involves applying anything — tape, glue, water, solvent, a "gentle" cleaning you saw online — and the object is irreplaceable, the odds are good you'll make it worse. The Library of Congress is quietly emphatic on this point: when an original truly matters, the move isn't to display the fragile thing or doctor it. It's to make a good reproduction and protect the original in proper storage. Reproduce, don't repair.

A professional conservator is not a handyman with fancier glue. They're trained to diagnose what an object is made of and to choose treatments that are, wherever possible, reversible — the same principle that's run through this whole course. To find one, the place to start in the United States is the American Institute for Conservation, which keeps a "Find a Conservator" directory you can search by specialty and region. Expect a conservator to begin with examination and a written assessment before touching anything — and expect that assessment to sometimes conclude that the right treatment is no treatment, just better housing. That's not them dodging the work. That's the philosophy doing its job.

So here's what to carry out of all of this. Pests are an inevitability you manage, not an enemy you eliminate — tight building, clean room, traps you actually check. The family's photos aren't yours; you're the steward, which means sharing them, writing down what you did, and handing them forward to someone you'll never meet. And the bravest preservation decision is sometimes to keep your own hands off — to reproduce instead of repair, and to call someone trained when an object is slipping past what prevention can hold.
