You don't try to avoid folds entirely on a big garment; you soften them. You pad each fold with crumpled unbuffered acid-free tissue, so the fabric bends around a gentle bundle instead of pressing flat against itself. A rolled-up undyed cotton pillowcase or a soft towel works too. The goal is to turn a sharp crease into a loose curve. No knife-edge means no split.
So now the question becomes how to store the thing at all, and here textile people think in a kind of hierarchy. The best option for most flat or foldable items is flat storage in a box — laid out as openly as the box allows, padded at any necessary folds, supported underneath. The second option, for long narrow things like a lace runner or a carpet, is rolling. Winterthur's method for rolling at home is clever: take a sturdy cardboard tube, wrap it in aluminum foil to seal off the acids in the cardboard, add a cotton header so the fabric starts evenly, and roll the textile on with the diameter matched to the size of the piece. Then wrap the whole roll in clean undyed muslin and tie it with cotton twill tape. Rolling beats folding because there's no single stress line — the bend is spread across the entire curve of the tube.
And then there's hanging, which most people reach for first and which conservators treat as a last resort. Think about what happens to a hanging garment. Every thread in those shoulder seams is holding up the entire weight of the dress, all day, every day, for years. The North Carolina Museum of History is blunt about it — garments with fragile shoulder seams or heavy beadwork should not be hung on any type of hanger. The beading on a 1920s dress can literally tear itself off the fabric under its own weight. If something genuinely must hang — because it's structurally sound, has three-dimensional parts that would crush in a box, and isn't a stretchy knit — then the hanger has to be padded thick with polyester batting and covered in cotton or stockinette, shaped to carry the weight evenly across the shoulders. If you do want a box, the museum-grade answer is an archival box, but Winterthur points out a cheaper one that works fine at home — a polyethylene plastic bin. That specific plastic matters. Polyethylene is stable and doesn't give off the volatile gases that cheaper plastics do. Whatever the box, line it with a big piece of undyed cotton muslin or a plain bed sheet so the lining acts as a sling. When you want the item out, you lift the sling, not the fragile textile. You never grab a hundred-year-old quilt by one corner and drag it — that's the supported-handling principle this course keeps coming back to, just applied to something heavy and floppy.
Pests are the agent that's almost unique to fabric. Clothes moths and carpet beetles don't care about your photos, but they will eat protein fibers — wool, silk, fur — for breakfast. First, housekeeping: regular cleaning removes the airborne dust and debris that feed grazing insects in the first place. Second, monitoring: check closets and storage boxes seasonally for signs of infestation, because moths are far easier to stop early than to evict once they've spread through the house. Winterthur notes that dust attracts both insects and moisture, and over time it works into the fabric and causes actual chemical changes. Light is the agent that gives textiles no second chances. Light fades the dyes and embrittles the fibers, and every hour of exposure adds to a total that never goes back down. Both Winterthur and the North Carolina museum single out ultraviolet as the worst offender, the same way UV is hardest on human skin. So if you display a quilt or a sampler, you're making a trade — visibility now for fading later. You manage that trade three ways. Keep it out of direct sunlight, in a hallway or interior wall rather than a sunny window. Put UV-filtering film on the windows of the room, or frame the piece behind UV-filtering glass or acrylic. And rotate it — bring it out for a season, then rest it in the dark and show something else, so no single piece absorbs the whole lifetime dose. For a big quilt or tapestry you want to hang, Winterthur's method spreads the load: sew the soft loop side of Velcro onto cotton twill tape, then hand-stitch the tape along the top edge so the weight is carried evenly across the whole width — never from a few nails or clips.
That leaves cleaning, where the single most important word is restraint. A museum textile cannot be washed like the laundry, and the home temptation is to fix decades of grime in an afternoon. Don't. For a stable, sound textile, the safe limit at home is gentle vacuuming — and even that comes with a guardrail. The North Carolina Museum of History describes the screening method: lay a fiberglass screen over the fabric, tape the cut edges so no stray wire snags a thread, and run a soft, clean brush attachment over the screen on low suction, working in one direction without dragging.
