How to Preserve Scrapbooks and Family Photo Albums

That drawer of jumbled chemistry has one more thing in it, usually shoved at the back — a fat black book, its cover hanging by a thread, and when you open it the pages crackle. The photos inside are mounted on coal-black paper that's gone soft and powdery at the edges. There's a yellowed newspaper clipping curling away from the page. A pressed flower, now brown dust. A theater ticket glued down with something that's turned orange and brittle. And the photos themselves — when you try to lift one, the corner stays stuck and the picture tears.

That scrapbook is doing something the snapshot in the same drawer never does. It's eating itself. And it's eating itself precisely because it's not one thing — it's a dozen incompatible things stacked together in a closed book, each one decaying at its own speed and poisoning its neighbors as it goes. That's the whole problem this chapter is built around, and it's the hardest preservation problem in your house.

Here's why scrapbooks and albums are uniquely brutal. Everything you've learned so far in this course assumes you can isolate a thing and control its environment. A letter gets its own acid-free folder. A glass plate gets its own padded box. But a scrapbook refuses to be isolated, because the whole point of it was to bring everything together — the photo, the clipping, the ticket stub, the lock of hair, the glue — and bind them shut in the dark for decades. The Library of Congress calls these "composite items," and that word is doing a lot of quiet work. It means one object made of materials that don't agree with each other.

And the worst offender is usually the page itself. A lot of mid-century scrapbooks used black construction paper, or cheap wood-pulp stock — exactly the kind of high-lignin, acidic paper that, as the earlier chapter on acid hydrolysis laid out, generates its own acid as it ages. So you've got an acidic page pressed flat against a photograph, in the dark, for forty years — and as we saw with paper chemistry, the acid migrates straight into whatever it's touching. A black-page scrapbook is a hundred of those leaking sources at once.

Then there's the glue. This is the part that breaks conservators' hearts. The adhesives people reached for — rubber cement, the brown mucilage in the bottle with the slanted rubber tip, ordinary household glue — were never meant to last. Rubber cement in particular oxidizes over time. It turns hard, then brittle, then it stains the paper a deep orange-brown that bleeds clear through to the front of the photo. And here's the cruel twist: as it ages, rubber cement often stops holding. So you get the worst of both worlds — a stain that's permanent, and a bond that's failed, which means photos sliding loose and shuffling around inside the book, getting scratched and creased every time someone turns a page.

Which brings up the single most dangerous album ever marketed to families. The magnetic album. The "self-stick" album, with the sticky cardboard pages and the clear plastic flap you peeled back and pressed down over your photos. Millions of households filled these up through the seventies, eighties, and nineties. The name is a lie — there's no magnet involved. It's adhesive lines on an acidic cardboard page, with a plastic overlay that, more often than not, was PVC. And PVC, as the chapter on storage materials warned, off-gasses acid as it breaks down. So a magnetic album is a perfect storm: acidic backing board below, adhesive in the middle, and a sheet of degrading plastic on top, all squeezing a photo from both sides. The adhesive yellows, hardens, and grips the photo so tightly that pulling it free can rip the image layer right off the paper backing. If you own these, treat them as a slow emergency. Not a panic — a priority.

So what do you actually do with a scrapbook that's falling apart? This is where most people freeze, and it's a fair place to freeze, because the decision is genuinely hard. The question is whether to leave the scrapbook intact or take it apart and rehouse the pieces. And the answer most people jump to is the wrong one.

The instinct is to rescue. To carefully peel every photo off those poisonous black pages, throw the album away, and tuck the freed photos into nice new acid-free sleeves. It feels like saving them. But stop for a second — what would you actually be destroying? … The arrangement is information. The order your grandmother chose, the captions she wrote in her own hand beside each photo, the way she placed the wedding picture next to the honeymoon ticket — that's a document she made. Pull it apart and you've preserved the photos and erased the person who assembled them. The Library of Congress is clear on this: for historical scrapbooks with real condition problems, taking them apart is conservation treatment, and that's a job for a book, paper, or photograph conservator — not a Saturday afternoon with a butter knife.

So here's the working rule for a home. Default to leaving it intact. Lift the whole object up a level — control its environment and its handling rather than dismantling it. You're not trying to fix the scrapbook. You're trying to slow it down and stop it from hurting itself further. That's the same move this entire course keeps coming back to, applied to the messiest object you own.

Now, "leave it intact" doesn't mean leave it alone. The most powerful thing you can do for a scrapbook costs almost nothing and takes about twenty minutes — interleaving. You slip a sheet of acid-free, lignin-free paper between every page, or at least between the pages doing the most damage. What that thin sheet does is brilliant in its simplicity. It puts a chemically stable barrier between the acidic page and the photo it's been attacking, so the acid has somewhere neutral to go instead of straight into the image. The Northeast Document Conservation Center makes the point bluntly in their leaflet on storage enclosures — acidic interleaving papers transfer acid to whatever they touch, so the interleaving sheet itself has to be the good stuff. A cheap sheet of copier paper would just add another acidic towel to the pile.

There's one wrinkle worth knowing, and it's a place people get tripped up. A lot of acid-free paper is also buffered — it's got an alkaline reserve, usually calcium carbonate, built in to neutralize acid as it forms. For most paper and most black-and-white material, that buffer is a gift. But as the storage-materials chapter flagged, some color photographs and certain early processes can be sensitive to high alkalinity. So if a scrapbook is heavy on color snapshots, unbuffered, neutral-pH interleaving is the safer default. When you're not sure what you've got, neutral and unbuffered is the choice that can't hurt you.

A quick gut-check before moving on. If a friend asked you why a forty-cent sheet of paper between the pages does more for a dying scrapbook than carefully ungluing every photo — what would you tell them? … Because the gluing already happened. You can't undo it without a conservator's training, but you can stop the acid from making it worse, and that's where almost all the remaining damage lives. Prevention, one more time, beating repair.

Once you've interleaved, the next job is storage, and bulky albums break a rule you might think you already knew. Books, your instinct says, belong upright on a shelf, spine out. Not these. A scrapbook is heavy and unevenly loaded — all that mounted material, the clippings, the lumps of dried glue — and standing it on end lets gravity drag everything downward against a failing binding. The Library of Congress is specific: store the album flat. Lay it down. And put it in a preservation-quality, well-fitting box that keeps out light, dust, and pests. The box matters as much as the position. It blocks the light that fades everything, it traps a little pocket of stable air around the object, and a snug fit keeps the album from sliding and flexing every time you move the box. Flat, boxed, in the dark — that's the resting state a scrapbook wants.

And where does that box go? Everything from the climate chapter applies here, just with higher stakes, because you've got so many vulnerable materials in one bundle. Cool, room temperature or below. Relatively dry — the Library of Congress suggests around thirty-five percent relative humidity for these. Stable, away from radiators and vents, away from anywhere prone to leaks. Which means, one more time, not the attic, not the basement, not the garage. A scrapbook is the worst possible thing to store in the worst possible place, because it concentrates every fragility you've learned about into a single object that can't be replaced.

Here's where it gets genuinely useful, though — because some of you don't have a hundred-year-old heirloom to rescue. You want to make a scrapbook, one that won't betray your grandchildren the way that black-page book betrayed you. The good news is that everything that destroyed the old albums tells you exactly what to do differently. This is the contested edge, by the way — there's a real split between the modern hobby-scrapbooking world, which sells mountains of decorative adhesives and patterned papers of wildly uneven quality, and the conservation world, which is ruthless about materials. The conservators win this one on the evidence, because we can watch the hobby materials fail in real albums. So build like a conservator.

Start with the page. Use heavy, acid-free, lignin-free stock — and the Library of Congress adds a detail people miss: choose paper thick enough to actually support the weight of whatever you're mounting on it. A flimsy page sags and lets your photos detach. For attaching things, this is where you break the lifelong habit. No glue. The Library of Congress recommends wheat-starch paste — a gentle, reversible adhesive conservators trust — or, better and easier for most people, non-adhesive photo corners made of acid- and lignin-free paper or polyethylene. Photo corners hold the picture by its edges and let you lift it back out later without a trace. The whole philosophy is reversibility: never do anything to a photo you can't cleanly undo.

For any plastic — sleeves, overlays, page protectors — only three materials are safe, and they're worth memorizing because they're the same three the photo-storage chapter named: polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyester. If a product doesn't say one of those words, assume it's the bad plastic. And the everyday office supplies that wrecked so many family papers stay out of the album entirely — no rubber bands, no self-adhesive tape, no paper clips, no staples. Each one is a small, slow act of vandalism. Finally, pick a structure that can grow. The Library of Congress specifically recommends an expandable format like a three-ring binder, and keep the whole thing modest in size and weight, because a giant overstuffed album is a binding waiting to fail.

So strip all this down to what actually matters, and three things are doing the real work. A scrapbook decays fast because incompatible materials attack each other in the dark — the page poisons the photo, the glue stains and fails. The single highest-leverage move on an old one isn't surgery, it's a barrier: interleave with stable paper, box it flat, keep it cool and dark, and leave the dismantling to a conservator. And when you build a new one, every rule is just the failures run backwards — acid-free pages, photo corners instead of glue, the three safe plastics, and a structure modest enough not to crush itself.

That's the hardest object in the house handled — the one made of a dozen quarreling materials. The next heirloom won't quarrel with itself. It'll simply collapse under its own weight, and the cedar chest you trusted to save it is part of the problem.
